Diversity and biogeography of vascular epiphytes in Western Amazonia, Yasunı́, Ecuador

چکیده
Aim Although vascular epiphytes are important components of species richness and complexity of Neotropical forests, vascular epiphytes are under-represented in large scale biogeographical analyses. We studied the diversity, biogeography and floristic relationships of the epiphytic flora of the Yasunı́ region (Western Amazonia) in a Neotropical context, with special emphasis on the influence of the Andean flora on floristic composition and diversity of surrounding lowland forests.

Alpha and beta diversity of Lianas in Yasunı́, Ecuador
Stems of 4348 lianas from 12 subsampled 1 ha plots in Yasunı́, Ecuador represented more than 311 species of climbing woody plants. The plots (each 0.2 ha in area), which individually included up to 106 species among 314 stems, were established in the Huaorani Ethnic Reserve and Yasunı́ National Park and represent terra firme and floodplain habitats. Yasunı́ is one of the richest areas sampled for ...
متن کاملAmber from western Amazonia reveals Neotropical diversity during the middle Miocene.
Tertiary insects and arachnids have been virtually unknown from the vast western Amazonian basin. We report here the discovery of amber from this region containing a diverse fossil arthropod fauna (13 hexapod families and 3 arachnid species) and abundant microfossil inclusions (pollen, spores, algae, and cyanophyceae). This unique fossil assemblage, recovered from middle Miocene deposits of nor...
متن کاملDiversity, Abundance and Habitats of the Primates in the Río Curaray Basin, Peruvian Amazonia
Western Amazonia is one of the regions of the world with the highest terrestrial biodiversity. We conducted transect censuses between November and December 2012 in order to determine the diversity and the densities of primate populations, and their group sizes and habitat use in the Río Curaray region. During 610 km of transect surveys, we encountered 304 groups of 13 primate species. Woolly mo...
متن کاملBeta-diversity in tropical forest trees.
The high alpha-diversity of tropical forests has been amply documented, but beta-diversity-how species composition changes with distance-has seldom been studied. We present quantitative estimates of beta-diversity for tropical trees by comparing species composition of plots in lowland terra firme forest in Panama, Ecuador, and Peru. We compare observations with predictions derived from a neutra...
متن کاملGlobal Conservation Significance of Ecuador's Yasun National Park
Background: The threats facing Ecuador’s Yasunı́ National Park are emblematic of those confronting the greater western Amazon, one of the world’s last high-biodiversity wilderness areas. Notably, the country’s second largest untapped oil reserves—called ‘‘ITT’’—lie beneath an intact, remote section of the park. The conservation significance of Yasunı́ may weigh heavily in upcoming state-level and...
